'Hum's premiere in Detroit is a success!

My latest composition, 'Hum', was premiered on September 17th, 2016, by Jamaal May, New Music Detroit and Michelle Merrill (conductor). Commissioned by New Music Detroit, 'Hum' received a standing ovation from the sold-out crowd at Wasserman Projects in Detroit's Eastern Markets district.

It was also an honour to have Khalid El-Hakim in the audience. Khalid is the director of the Black History 101 Museum, and introduced Jamaal May and I about ten years ago. That introduction started 'Hum' in motion, and the piece was appropriately dedicated to him.

It was a wonderful day of music-making at Strange Beautiful Music IX, Detroit's annual new music marathon curated by New Music Detroit. The day also featured music by American composers David Lang and Marc Mellits, a set of solo pieces (performed by New Music Detroit ensemble members) in tribute to Steve Reich's 80th birthday, and works by Boulez, George Benjamin amongst others.
